*YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED*

The brilliant twist in M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable was that we had been watching, unbeknownst to us, a superhero movie: Bruce Willis’ David Dunn was the hero, and Samuel L. Jackson’s Elijah Price was the villain. Dark and grounded-in-reality, Unbreakable was way ahead of its time in the superhero genre, and if you’re asking me, it’s still Shyamalan’s very best film.

*SPOILERS INCOMING. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED. AGAIN.*

The twist in Split? It’s a sequel to Unbreakable, taking place in the same world that David and Elijah live inside of. At the very end of the movie, Dunn makes a surprise appearance and makes reference to Price, suggesting that we’re eventually in store for a sequel that will bring Dunn, Price, and new super-villain Kevin Wendell Crumb together for, well, the real Unbreakable 2.

And straight from Shyamalan’s own mouth, that is indeed the plan!

Speaking with Coming Soon, he teased the continuation of his superhero universe:

I have every intention of doing one more. I can’t guarantee it, because I’m a writer and I don’t really write for other people. The only reason I can’t guarantee it is, because I don’t know what the demons are going to do when I get into the room. They may shut me down. They may not come out. I think the reason I’ve never done a sequel and never even been interested is because I don’t like knowing. I want to tell you a new story each time. I don’t know if those things are going to grab me and freeze me, but I have every intention of doing that. I’m hoping I don’t freeze up.
Shyamalan added:
I think the ‘Unbreakable’ world is about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary. That’s kind of Elijah’s thesis. That excites me when we’re talking about maybe another one. What would Elijah’s reaction be to Kevin Wendell Crumb? He’d be like, ‘I knew it!’ (laughs).

Now THIS is the movie I want to see.
