Victor Salva‘s 2001 Jeepers Creepers followed a brother (Justin Long) and sister (Gina Philips) driving home through isolated countryside for spring break when encounter a flesh-eating creature which is on the last day of its ritualistic eating spree. The brother, Darry, dies at the end of the film, which sets the stage for the forthcoming third film that’s scheduled to begin filming as early as next month.
Casting website MEW carries an alternate synopsis that reveals a huge connection to the first film:
“Trish Jenner is now a mother of a teenage son named Darry, named after the brother she lost 23 years ago. Trish has a recurring nightmare where her son suffers the same fate as her brother did, killed by the Creeper. Determined to prevent this from happening, Trish, who is now a rich and powerful woman, sets out on a final quest with Jack Taggart Sr. and Jr. to end the Creeper’s reign of terror once and for all. The Creeper fights back in gory glory as its enemies grow closer than ever before to learning the secret of its dark origins.”
Yup, Jeepers Creepers 3 is told through the eyes of an older Trish (Gina Philips; who we revealed would be returning last March), who now has a son. But what makes the new film immensely interesting is that Trish is now a strong protagonist who is turning the tables on the Creeper (played once again by Jonathan Breck). It sort of reminds me when Laurie Strode did the same to Michael Myers in Halloween: H20 and even when Ripley did it in Aliens. This is one way to further the story without retread and I love it.
The first two films in the franchise, Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers II, were both global box office hits, grossing over $120 million combined worldwide. The first two films were also hugely popular with genre fans and critics, and horror fans have long clamored for a new installment of The Creeper’s misdeeds.
